These two doors are antique Dogon house doors from the Bandiagara Plateau in Mali, West Africa.
The symbols are of deities or ancestors and the house or grain store is considered protected and 'safe' once behind the carved doors. To the Dogon the crocodile is the protector of (very) scarce pools of water and is the servant of the Nommo, the mythic beings or 'water spirits' who were involved in the creation of mankind and culture.
The doors were gifted to a West Country farmer decades ago who went there and helped them develop a better supply of water. The doors spent years in his barn and after his death we acquired them from his relatives.
