This trunk/toolbox has a couple of unusual features. The top has a covering of stretched leather that has then been painted, this was probably done when it was first made. Secondly the initial N has been partly removed to turn it into an I, implying that son (say) Ian took it over from his dad (say) Neil. Tools were vital for earning a living in pre-welfare state days and so were highly prized and valued possessions. To pass your tools onto your son when his apprentice finished would set him up for life.
