In the days before washing machines and automated laundry facilities all clothes had to be washed by hand. An essential piece of equipment in any wash house or kitchen was the washboard. Clothes soaking in a shallow tin bath would be rubbed against the corrugated zinc or glass faces to bring out the dirt. They were sometimes also used as a percussive instrument, especially in skiffle bands. Here we have one with a glass face.
